Socrates:
Socrates was born in Athens at around 469 B.C. He was the son of a stone mason. He served in the Athenian army and fought in the Peloponessian War. Like all Athenian boys, he recieved a formal Greek education. He had certain tastes in the works of philosophers. His most famous student was Plato. Since Socrates never wrote down his ideas or thoughts, Plato would write them out. From what Plato wrote about Socrates, we know that Socrates was short, ugly, poor, and quite famous around Athens. Socrates was also known well for the Socratic Method. This was a system used in an arguement or debate. As recorded in one of Plato's writings, Apology, Meletus acuused Socrates of corrupting the minds of the youth with his philosophies. Socrates then started asking all these questions which ended up with Socrates outsmarting Meletus of his own thoughts.
It is said that Meletus, Lycon, and Antyus charged Socrates with impiety and corrupting the minds of the youth. Socrates had a trial and gave a speech saying that he isn't going to give in. He was convicted and then sentenced to death by drinking the poison Hemlock. As recorded in Plato's writing Phaedo, Socrates discusses the immortality of the soul. Afterwards, he gets ready to drink the poison with his friends grieving at the side. Right before he dies, he reminds Crito that he owes a rooster to Aesculapius.
Although Socrates never wrote what he thought, he is the most important figure in ancient philosophy. His life, his pupils, his death, and most importantly, his philosophies, will never be forgotten.
